Myofascial release is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain.
– relaxes contracted muscles
– improves blood and lymphatic circulation
– stimulates stretch reflexes in muscles
This type of therapy can be done both by using one’s hands and/or using specialized tools.
Fascia is the soft tissue component of connective tissue network that provides support and protection for most structures within the human body, including muscle. It is known that this soft tissue can become restricted due to overuse, trauma, infectious agents, psychogenic disease, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and diminished blood flow. Although fascia and its corresponding muscle(s) are the main targets of myofascial release, other tissue may be addressed as well, including other connective tissue.
